BSNL’s engagement with BCG not a fruitful exercise, employee union shares

Submitted by admin on May 31st, 2024

BSNL has engaged with Boston Consulting Group (BCG) for the company’s revival plan which would cost Rs 132 crore. However, the BSNL Employees Union considers it a “futile exercise”.

“Already the company has engaged consultants such as Deloitte and KPMG. All the recommendations of these consultants have already been implemented. Still, BSNL’s condition has worsened,” the association said in a letter to BSNL CMD PK Purwar.

FE reported on Monday that BCG would draft a three-year roadmap to revive the BSNL, which is owned by the Indian Government, so that it could effectively enter competition with private telecom operators.

The telecom service provider is currently incurring heavy loss. To address it, BCG will offer advice on key areas including operational cost reduction, revenue improvement, and delivering better customer experience, harnessing new-age technologies to improve sales and planning sales and developing strategies aligned with the industry benchmarks.

“The root of the problem lies elsewhere,” the union said.

“Basically, the decline of BSNL is attributable to the company’s inability to expand its networks with state-of-the-art technology,” it added.

The union cited government-imposed restrictions including rejecting permissions for the BSNL’s 4G-compatible BTS’ upgrades and restricting BSNL from getting 4G equipment from global vendors so that the company can stay on par with its private competitors, as the major obstacles in the company’s progress.

The union suggested that it harnesses the existing pool of talented and experienced workforce within the company, instead of opting for work outsourcing, which, according to them, is waste of in-house resources.
